  Morocco's 1H trade deficit widens to USD12bn
Jul , 23 , 2012
Morocco's trade deficit widened during the first half of this year to MAD100bn (USD12bn), according to the country's central bank, which attributed the increased gap to higher fuel prices, slowing global economic growth and the Euro-zone sovereign debt crisis. "Imports rose to MAD190bn driven by an 18 percent increase in energy products and raw material prices in the first half of 2012 versus the comparative period of 2011," Bank Al-Maghreb said in a new monthly report. The country's overall exports could only cover 47 percent of the imports during the period, data showed.

Jul , 23 , 2012
Egypt's budget deficit will rise 12.5 percent to EGP135.0bn (USD22.26bn) in the fiscal year that began on July 1, a draft budget issued, though the government is already struggling to find funding for the shortfall. Egypt's borrowing costs have soared since the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak in a street revolt last year, which sent the economy into a tailspin and left local banks taking almost the entire burden of lending to the state. Total expenditure will climb to EGP533.8bn this year from EGP476.3bn in 2011/12, the ministry said in the draft budget, posted on its website.

The Office for National Statistics said annual consumer price inflation dropped to 2.4 percent from 2.8 percent in May - the lowest since November 2009 - beating economists' forecasts for a steady reading. The biggest downward contribution to the annual rate came from a fall in the prices of clothes and footwear, followed by slower inflation for transport and food.

Bernanke offers gloomy view but few new hints on easing
Jul , 18 , 2012
Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke offered a gloomy view of the economy's prospects, but provided few concrete clues on whether the U.S. central bank was moving closer to a fresh round of monetary stimulus. Bernanke told the Senate Banking Committee the economic recovery was being held back by anxiety over Europe’s debt crisis and the path of U.S. fiscal policy, and he expressed unease over a stagnant jobs market. The Fed chairman told lawmakers the central bank was considering a range of tools it could employ to help the economy but he hewed closely to the message of watchful waiting that the central bank's policy panel delivered in June.
